Route 59 crash near Hoffman Estates sends two drivers to hospital

Cook County sheriff's police are investigating a crash near Hoffman Estates that sent two drivers to the hospital - including one with life-threatening injuries.

According to preliminary information provided by the sheriff's office, on Friday afternoon, a Chevrolet was traveling north on Route 59 when it veered into the southbound lane and struck a Volkswagen head-on near Shoe Factory Road.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 25-year-old man, was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said. The 21-year-old driver of the Chevrolet was also taken a hospital for treatment, but his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

ABC 7 Chicago showed aerial views of the scene that revealed at least two badly damaged cars, one appearing to be nearly split in half and with the top of it missing. A semitrailer truck was nearby, as were other vehicles.

All of Route 59 was blocked while fire trucks and ambulances were on the scene.
