Aurora man sentenced to 22 years for attempted murder

An Aurora man has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for slashing another man with a knife and sending him to the hospital with what are likely permanent injuries, prosecutors said.

Kane County Associate Judge David R. Kliment on Thursday sentenced 35-year-old Shaun J. Ramirez, who was convicted in August of attempted murder and armed violence. He must serve 85 percent of his sentence but will receive credit for 308 days in the Kane County jail, where he has been held since his arrest in lieu of $750,000 bail.

Ramirez and the victim were talking outside Ramirez's home on the 1300 block of North Glen Circle last December when Ramirez, who was intoxicated, punched the man in the mouth and slashed him on the left side with a knife, according to a news release from the Kane County state's attorney's office.

The victim wrestled Ramirez to the ground, and they exchanged punches; the victim then stood, told Ramirez the fight was over and got into a friend's car, the release said.

But Ramirez reached through passenger-side window and began to stab the victim in the face and throat, then grabbed the victim's right arm and began to saw at it, cutting a large chunk from the bone, the release said.

The victim suffered significant injuries to his right arm, including detached tendons. Although he continues to recover, the attack has likely caused permanent damage, prosecutors said.

Ramirez was on parole for aggravated battery at the time of the attack. He has multiple prior convictions for violent offenses and has served at least three prison terms.

"This was a vicious, chilling and nearly deadly attack. Mr. Ramirez is dangerous and belongs in prison. I hope this victim believes that justice has been served," Kane County State's Attorney Joe McMahon said.
