Police search for burglar who shot house sitter near St. Charles North

Police are searching Thursday afternoon for a burglar who shot a man in the shoulder during a home invasion near St. Charles North High School.

Police said they responded to a call from a 28-year-old man who told them he had just been shot. The victim is related to the owner of the home, on the 3600 block of Grand View Court, and was house sitting at the time. Police rushed to the scene, arrived at around 2:30 p.m. and secured the area.

The victim was taken to Delnor Hospital-Northwestern Medicine by the St. Charles Fire Department. He was conscious and breathing, and his wound is not considered to be life-threatening.

The scene has been cordoned off during the investigation. Police said that while they are conducting an active investigation for the suspect, they do not believe that there is a danger to the public, they said in a news release just after 5 p.m.

The school was put on soft lockdown because of the burglary west of the school around 2:30 p.m. The lockdown was lifted about 4:15 p.m., city and St. Charles Community Unit District 303 officials confirmed via Twitter.

Because the school was placed on soft lockdown after class was dismissed for the day, most of the students had already left. Students involved in sports or clubs were still inside the school.

District 303 officials also decided to delay dismissals at nearby Ferson Creek and Wild Rose Elementary Schools until police gave the all clear.
