Waukegan man charged in fatal shooting near Grayslake

A 19-year-old Waukegan man is being held in a Milwaukee jail on a first-degree murder charge alleging he gunned down a Zion man early Saturday morning near Grayslake, authorities said.

Jasperin F. Melendez, of the 1100 block of West Grove Avenue, was taken into custody about 9 p.m. Saturday at a fast-food restaurant drive-through in Milwaukee, Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Chris Covelli said.

Melendez must be extradited from Wisconsin before returning to Lake County, where he will be held on $5 million bail. It's not yet known when an extradition hearing will take place, Covelli said.

Officials on Monday identified the victim as Fabian J. Cortez-Milan, 30, of the 2000 block of Jethro Avenue in Zion. An autopsy Monday determined his death a homicide caused by gunfire, according to the Lake County coroner's office.

The shooting occurred about 1:36 a.m. Saturday in the 33300 block of Lone Rock Road near Grayslake. Cortez-Milan was taken from the scene to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Covelli said there was a gathering at the single-family home about the time of the shooting, but did not provide any additional details. Nobody else was injured.

The investigation remains open and anyone with information is asked to call the Lake County Sheriff's Office at (847) 549-5200 or Lake County Crime Stoppers at (847) 662-2222.
