2 men charged in armed robbery of Naperville teen

Two men accused of robbing a 14-year-old at gunpoint in Naperville now face felony charges, authorities said Monday.

One of the men, who is accused of driving the getaway car, also has been charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding because, Naperville police said, he was speeding and ignoring traffic signals as he led officers on a short-lived chase.

Charged in connection with the Aug. 21 robbery are Craig C. Garner, 19, of the 900 block of 3rd Street in LaSalle, and Jalen T. Martinez, 20, of the 1400 block of Carleton Avenue in Naperville.

Both face one count of aggravated armed robbery, while Martinez also was charged with fleeing and eluding.

Naperville police Cmdr. Lou Cammiso said investigators had been on the lookout for Garner for two months before arresting him on Friday. He said they took Martinez into custody Sept. 11.

The two are accused of showing a handgun about 1 a.m. Aug. 21 when they took a backpack containing electronics, as well as other items, from a 14-year-old Naperville boy on the 600 block of South Route 59.

The boy was not injured, but Cammiso said none of his stolen belongings were found in the getaway car when police discovered the red sedan abandoned by the suspects on the 1200 block of Webster Street.

Police, however, did find a handgun in the vehicle the morning of the robbery, and discovery of the car gave investigators leads that helped track down Martinez and Garner, Cammiso said.
