Oktoberfest opens in Mount Prospect

Mount Prospect's Fall Festival/Oktoberfest opened Friday evening with a beer tent, local food vendors and German music drawing people downtown.

The event continues Saturday at 50 S. Emerson St. with the kids-oriented Fall Festival from 1-4 p.m. Children of all ages are encouraged to dress up in their Halloween costumes and participate in a trick-or-treat event at more than 30 local businesses. Other activities include pumpkin decorating, a craft table, balloon decorations and a scarecrow-making booth. Pony rides and bounce houses also are on the kid-focused fun docket.

Oktoberfest returns from 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday with more of Friday night's beer, food and entertainment options.

"We've rented and set up a giant TV screen so people can enjoy the Cubs and our Oktoberfest at the same time," said Chad Busse, president of the Mount Prospect Downtown Merchants Association, which sponsors the event.

Festival admission is free. Details are at mpdowntown.com.
