Matt LaPorte appointed as Mundelein parks recreation superintendent

Matt LaPorte has been appointed recreation superintendent for the Mundelein Park & Recreation District.

LaPorte has 16 years of experience in public recreation. Since January, he served in the same capacity for the McHenry Parks & Recreation Department and has managed its recreation center since August 2015.

He will replace Rita (Gordon) Kipp, who is retiring Friday after 34 years with the district.

“My immediate goal is to work with the team to get the new recreation center ready to open in the spring,” LaPorte said.

LaPorte was hired by the Vernon Hills Park District in December 2012 to manage what became the Lakeview Fitness Center at the former Central Lake YMCA building before leaving for the post in McHenry.

“He brings great experience opening new buildings and will be a big asset as we open our new recreation center in the spring of 2018,” said Margaret Resnick, executive director.

“Along with facility experience, he has a great programming background, and I'm sure our customers will be seeing some new program ideas that they will enjoy,” she added.

LaPorte has 16 years experience in public recreation and is a graduate of Illinois Park and Recreation Association's Leadership Academy. He also is on the board for Gigi's Playhouse, a Down syndrome achievement center.

Kipp started as a part-time employee before accepting a full-time post as athletic supervisor. She was instrumental in the district's growth, which included: construction of the Community Center and Park View Health and Fitness; Steeple Chase Golf Club; Diamond Lake Sports Complex; Barefoot Bay Family Aquatic Center; and, the Regent Center.
