Woman seriously injured after firework exploded in hand

A woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after a large firework exploded in her hand during a party Saturday near Antioch, officials say.

The explosion happened at 7:07 a.m. in the 21800 block of West North Avenue, Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Chris Covelli said. The blast injured two others, including a child, who were treated at the home for minor injuries, Covelli said.

Firefighters took the woman to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville to be treated for her injuries, which could cause her to lose a hand, according to Antioch Fire Batallion Chief Joe DuShane.

"As everything was going on we saw a few other people came up and asked to be seen because a flying glass hit them from the explosion," he said.

It was not immediately clear what kind of firework caused the woman's injuries or whether it was purchased and being used legally. Officers are investigating the situation and haven't determined whether anyone will be charged, Covelli said.
