New Arlington Heights police dog in training

Arlington Heights' new police dog is now in training and should be ready to hit the streets in November, officials said.

Named Brit, the dog is a 2½-year-old Belgian Malinois/German shepherd mix from Slovakia who heeds commands in Dutch. Brit is training with Arlington Heights Police Officer Mike Turano at Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, Indiana, according to Deputy Police Chief Mark Recker.

Police announced in April the death of 13-year-old police dog Layka, who retired a month prior due to an inoperable brain tumor.

With Brit, the police department will have three dogs on the force - one for each shift.
