Man killed in single-vehicle crash near St. Charles

A 19-year-old Geneva man died in a single-vehicle crash Friday morning northwest of St. Charles, officials said.

The Kane County sheriff's office is investigating the crash that occurred about 2 a.m. on Burr Road south of Hawkins Lane in unincorporated St. Charles Township.

The initial investigation revealed a Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling south on Burr Road when it left the road for an unknown reason, officials said. It flipped and eventually came to a rest in a tree line on the east side of Burr Road.

The driver got out of the vehicle before deputies arrived to find the car on fire, officials said. After extinguishing the fire, they found the passenger, Nicholas Hanson, 19, of the 3000 block of Husking Peg Lane, inside the car; he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver, Raphael Peruzza, 19, of the 2000 block of Eldorado Drive, Geneva, was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, where he remains hospitalized with injuries not considered to be life-threatening, the sheriff's office said.

The crash remains under investigation; the sheriff's office said detectives have not ruled out drugs, alcohol or excessive speed playing a role in this crash.
