New Rolling Meadows police dog in training

Six weeks of intense training started this week for Rolling Meadows' new police dog, Scar.

The canine crime fighter is a 2½-year-old Belgian Malinois/German shepherd mix, named for the scar he has on his paw. He is training with Rolling Meadows Police Officer Chris Don at Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, Indiana.

Police Chief John Nowacki decided this summer to bring back the department's police dog unit after a four-year absence, saying a dog could improve searches, increase officer safety when dealing with dangerous suspects, and promote positive community relations.
