Former Winfield fire official pleads guilty to attempted official misconduct
A former Winfield deputy fire chief was sentenced Thursday to two years of probation and 10 days in the DuPage Sheriff's Work Alternative Program.
Bryan Lewis, 45, of the 1900 block of Richton Drive in Wheaton, was sentenced after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of attempted official misconduct.
Lewis originally faced felony charges of forgery and official misconduct when in July 2016 he turned himself in.
According to the indictments in the case, Lewis on Feb. 5, 2016, presented Chief Phillip DiMenza with a false Triton College diploma dated May 1995. The official misconduct charge stemmed from the forgery allegations.
Fire district officials declined to address specifically why Lewis would be presenting a 19-year-old diploma to the chief but said promotional opportunities typically require such documentation.
Lewis resigned from the district in March 2016.
As part of his sentence, Lewis also is required to rescind a disability pension claim he had filed and pay $11,468 in restitution to the fire protection district to reimburse what the district spent on the claim.
