Wheeling to offer first citizen's academy in Spanish

The Wheeling Police Department is offering its first citizen's police academy in Spanish.

The department is now accepting applications for the free classes taught by Spanish-speaking officers one night a week from Sept. 14 through Nov. 9.

The classes will cover topics such as the history of the department, specific units, community relations, forensic evidence and investigations. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a police firing range exercise and a demonstration by the police dog unit.

Upon completion, participants have the option to ride along with a patrol officer.
