Prosecutors: Des Plaines brothers plead guilty to drug charges

Two Des Plaines brothers, arrested last year at a Rosemont steakhouse after an off-duty police officer suspected they were carrying illegal drugs, pleaded guilty to the charges.

Carlos Ortiz, 33, pleaded guilty Wednesday to possession of a firearm and to the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, court records show. In exchange, he was sentenced to two three-year prison terms, which the judge ordered he serve consecutively, according to court records. Ortiz, who received credit for 274 days in custody, was also ordered to pay $404 in fines.

Danny Ortiz, 30, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance in exchange for a one-year prison sentence. He also pleaded guilty to delivery of a controlled substance, for which he received a three-year prison sentence, prosecutors said.

Like his brother, Danny Ortiz was ordered to serve the sentences consecutively. He received credit for 190 days and was also ordered to pay $404 in fines.

During the brothers' bond hearings, prosecutors said the off-duty officer detected the odor of marijuana coming from a backpack beneath Carlos Ortiz's chair. That prompted the officer to call Rosemont police, prosecutors said.
