1 injured in Geneva house fire

One person was taken to the hospital Wednesday after a house fire in Geneva, officials say.

A neighbor called 911 about 8 p.m. when they saw flames coming from a front window of a home in the 200 block of Kansas Street, Fire Chief Mike Antenore said.

Firefighters found the homeowner, who had suffered burns, outside the house. The homeowner was the only person in the house at the time and was breathing and conscious before being taken to Delnor Hospital, Antenore said.

The house sustained fire and heat damage in its kitchen and smoke damage throughout.

The home was declared uninhabitable. No damage estimate was available Thursday. Geneva Township assessment records indicate it is a single-story, six-room house built in 1956. It last sold in 2009 for $155,000.

Antenore declined to say the sex or age of the victim until he determines whether such information is protected by federal medical records privacy law.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
