U-46 seeking future parent leaders
Elgin Area School District U-46 is seeking parents interested in joining one of its two-year leadership training programs that begin in October.
An informational session is at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Room 240 of the U-46 Educational Services Center, 355 E. Chicago St., Elgin.
Graduates of the district's African American and Hispanic parent leadership institutes have gone on to serve on the U-46 school board and Elgin City Council, as well local and state advisory councils. More than 100 parents, including school board member Veronica Noland and recently elected Elgin city Councilman Corey Dixon, have graduated from the programs since they were established in 2010.
"This is essentially a civics program; it helps develop leaders who can go on to represent our diverse community, whether they are serving on a school committee or the board of education," said Karla Jiménez, U-46 coordinator of family and community engagement.
This year, another 20 parents are moving into their second year of the program.
Parent members must attend 16 Saturday morning sessions over two school years and district meetings, and complete a family engagement project. For more information, call Jiménez at (847) 888-5000, ext. 4211.
