Des Plaines fire department accepting applications for citizen's academy

The Des Plaines Fire Department still has openings for its annual citizen's academy.

The academy, which teaches residents about the work of firefighters and paramedics, is 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Sept. 13 through Nov. 1.

Each session starts with classroom lessons followed by hands-on activities. Participants will learn about vehicle extrication, hose line deployment/management, ladder truck operations, engine company operations, CPR, emergency medical services and air packs.
