New programs, leaders welcome students returning to U-46 schools

Several new principals and administrators welcomed more than 40,000 students returning to classes Wednesday at Elgin Area School District U-46 schools.

Also new this year: Various curricula and expansion of the district's dual language program through eighth grade.

During the spring, U-46 adopted a new science curriculum aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards for students in first through eighth grades, and for high school biology, chemistry and physics courses. The new standards emphasize critical thinking, creativity and innovation.

The district is revamping its music and arts education after more than a decade. The new fine arts curriculum incorporates new technology aligned with the National Core Arts Standards. It aims to engage the more than 22,000 students enrolled in music education - band, orchestra, chorus and general music - to think more analytically through hands-on interactive lessons to identify how music and rhythm come together.

Physical education teachers at eight middle schools will implement new methods to help students understand their fitness levels and needs. The new curriculum, aligned with and state and national physical education standards, focuses on students' individual growth. It includes the use of iPads, audio/visual equipment, and heart rate monitors for students to keep track of fitness and performance levels. It will be implemented in seventh grade this year, and roll up to eighth grade next school year.

The dual language program expands into eighth grade. Last school year, it was implemented in seventh grade with two courses in Spanish - Spanish language arts and social studies.

"While we anxiously await our state budget, nothing has stopped us from preparing for a great 2017-18 school year, including new curriculum and resources," U-46 CEO Tony Sanders said.
