Some photos take longer to make than others. This picture of my son Erik, 14, took me more than two years to finally capture.For the longest time, I had been driving by a basketball court just West of Elgin on Plank Road and envisioning an image like this. I tired on numerous occasions with both my boys to stop and take a photograph. Not enough time, not the right light, too early, or they just did not want to be photographed.Finally I caught it just right and was able to photograph Erik.For this photo, I set up two flashes and fired them wirelessly. One of the flashes pointing at the basket and the other on a light stand pointing at where Erik would jump.I laid on the court to get just the right angle and had Erik proceed to do about 30-40 jumps. It was his idea to hang his tongue out like Michael Jordan. This photo was published in the Perspective column in the print edition of the Daily Herald.

The Chicago International Dragon Boat Festival returned to Lake Arlington in Arlington Heights with Ursula Mandecka of Arlington Heights and teammate Viviana Arteaga of Chicago showing their muscles before the race. They apparently had the muscle as they ended up celebrating with their teammates team the Windy City Lady Dragons after winning their Premier Woman Race #1 leg of the race.
