Rolling Meadows Cornfest still sweet after 61 years

A summer staple of the Northwest suburbs for more than six decades, the Community Church of Rolling Meadows' annual Cornfest on Saturday welcomed church members and those from the community at large for a day of food, fun and fellowship.

Attendees indulged in the famous all-you-can-eat locally grown sweet corn, picked just hours before it was boiled and smothered in butter, organizers say. There also were hamburgers, brats, hot dogs and watermelon. And for the first time, those who didn't want to get out of their cars could take some corn to go from a drive-through lane.

The church, at the northeast corner of Kirchoff Road and Meadow Drive, has been holding the annual fest since August 1957. Church members got the idea after observing a community corn boil while on vacation.
