According to the NNO website, the first annual National Night Out in 1984 involved 2.5 million people in 400 communities across 23 states.The event has expanded to block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and events featuring a focus on safety demonstrations. According to the website - "Today, thirty eight million neighbors in sixteen thousand communities across the nation take part in National Night Out."
