Nearly 20 departments fight St. Charles house fire

A massive garage fire yesterday afternoon in St. Charles damaged a home, three cars and a neighboring garage and drew firefighters from 19 different departments, fire officials said. The blaze, which started at about 12:30 p.m. in a detached garage on the 300 block of Indiana Street, shot clouds of black smoke into the sky that were visible from as far away as Dean Street and Randall Road Monday afternoon. Carpentersville home uninhabitable after fire

A fire last night left a Carpentersville house uninhabitable. Firefighters were called at about 6:30 p.m. to a single-story, single-family home on Sparrow Road and arrived to find one of the home's residents attempting to extinguish and exterior fire with a garden hose. Full story.

Barrington's Main Street reopens to drivers

Drivers can again use all of Main Street in downtown Barrington after sewer and water line replacement work was completed, village officials said yesterday. Known as Lake-Cook Road outside Barrington, eastbound Main at Spring Street and the westbound side at Wool Street had been barricaded since July 10. Drivers were diverted to a detour using Route 59/Hough Street and Northwest Highway. Full story.

Rizzo hosts youth baseball camp in Rosemont

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo instructed some 350 boys and girls on the fundamentals of baseball yesterday inside Rosemont's indoor sports dome. Rizzo threw whiffle balls during batting practice, talked the finer points of infield defensive strategy, gave high-fives and posed for pictures during the one-day baseball camp for youth in grades 1-8. Three charged with stealing from cars in Fox Lake

Two men and a juvenile have been charged with stealing from cars in Fox Lake, police said yesterday. Fox Lake police rolled up on three men carrying back packs just before 3 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Forest Avenue and Oak Street, police said in a news release.
