59-year-old man dies in Des Plaines after being struck by Metra train

A 59-year-old man died Thursday evening after being struck by a Metra train in downtown Des Plaines, officials said Friday morning.

Witnesses told investigators the man was standing alone on the east side of the Union Pacific Northwest train platform before he walked onto the tracks and faced the train as it struck him about 6 p.m., Des Plaines police said.

Minutes later, firefighters went to the scene near Graceland Avenue at Miner Street and determined he had died, Fire Chief Alan Wax said.

Metra police later viewed video footage and determined foul play is not suspected, police said.

The police department is not releasing the man's name until his family members are notified.
