Mount Prospect police seek suspect in residential burglary

Mount Prospect police are searching for a man they say entered a home Sunday in the 300 block of North Williams Street, and fled when a young resident in the home began screaming.

Police were called to the home at 12:01 p.m. to investigate a residential burglary, according to a news release from the Mount Prospect Police Department Monday. A juvenile girl, who was home at the time, told officers she heard knocking at the door a little before noon. Although she didn't answer the door, she looked down from an upstairs window and saw an unknown man looking into the window of the front door, according to the release.

When no one answered the door, the man let himself in, police said.

The girl ran into a nearby bedroom and locked the door. Meanwhile, the man went up the stairs and tried to enter the first door he came to, which happened to be the bedroom the girl was locked inside, according to the release.

The man fled north out the home's front door.

He is described as a white male, about 65 years old, with white hair. He was last seen wearing a black baseball hat, sunglasses, black T-shirt, black shorts and black shoes, according to the release.

While the situation remains under investigation, the police department is urging residents to talk with their children about what to do if they are home alone and someone comes to the door. Police recommend the person home alone make themselves known without opening or unlocking the door, by turning the volume up on a radio, turning on a TV, turning on lights or speaking through the locked door.
