Cumberland Cafe at Frisbie Senior Center reopens Monday

The Frisbie Senior Center in Des Plaines is opening its retooled food service operation - the Cumberland Cafe - Monday after a six-month hiatus.

The cafe had asked people to pay as they were able, but that model wasn't generating enough revenue, officials said. With the restructuring, which includes fixed pricing and new head chef Christopher Rodriguez, the cafe will offer low-cost breakfasts and lunches during the week to senior center clients and the general public.

It will be open from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and offer a menu that includes various breakfast options, soups, salads, and sandwiches as well as rotating specials. Catering services will be available and the cafe will offer special dinner events periodically throughout the year, coinciding with specific program offerings scheduled during evening hours.

"I'm pleased that we're able to reopen our food service operation and propel this aspect of our mission, as senior hunger remains a prevalent issue in our community," Stephen Samuelson, CEO of the Frisbie Senior Center, said in a news release. "We have learned over the years that our cafe helps to combat isolation for those who need support while aging at home."

The Frisbie Senior Center, at 52 E. Northwest Highway, is a drop-in activity center for older active adults 55+ living in the Northwest suburbs. For more information, visit www.frisbieseniorcenter.org.
