Board still considering Naperville Dist. 203 appointee

The field of 30 applicants for a vacancy on the Naperville Unit District 203 school board has not yet been narrowed to one.

After two interview sessions and two more meetings to discuss whom to appoint, the school board has not chosen a candidate to fill the vacancy created by the June 5 resignation of former member Mike Jaensch.

A vote was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, but the board was unable to come to consensus on who should be its newest member until the April 2, 2019, election, spokeswoman Michelle Fregoso said.

The panel now plans another closed-session meeting for 5:45 p.m. Friday to continue attempts to decide who should finish Jaensch's term.

Fregoso said the board is returning to its original plan of announcing its appointee during a meeting at 7 p.m. July 17 in the administrative center at 203 W. Hillside Road. That timeline allows the district to meet a deadline of 45 days after Jaensch's resignation to appoint his replacement.

Jaensch resigned because his job as a pilot for American Airlines transferred him to Dallas at the beginning of this month.

He served 10 years on the school board during a time when the district completed major renovations at Naperville Central High School and hired Superintendent Dan Bridges.

"It's been a wonderful experience," Jaensch said about his time on the board. "Our success speaks for itself."

Jaensch is the second District 203 board member in as many years to resign in the middle of a term.

Last year, Suzyn Price stepped down saying the board needed new ideas after issues with communication surfaced in fall 2015. Price now is running for U.S. Congress as a Democrat in the 6th District.

The board filled Price's seat with Charles Cush, who went on to win a 4-year term in this spring's election.

The person chosen to complete Jaensch's term also would need to run for election in 2019 in order to gain a 4-year seat.
