Fire breaks out at Vernon Hills supportive living facility

Fire broke out on the fifth floor of Victory Centre of Vernon Hills supportive living facility Wednesday morning, but no injuries were reported, authorities said.

Countryside Fire Protection District firefighters called to the facility about 9:05 a.m. found the staff leading residents out of the building, at 97 W. Phillip Road. They found a dryer on fire in the laundry room and the fifth-floor hallway filled with smoke.

The alarm was upgraded to a structure fire, bringing additional firefighters and equipment from the Countryside, Libertyville, Mundelein, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods fire departments.

The fire was controlled by a fire sprinkler and confined to the laundry room. Fire/smoke doors that automatically close also kept smoke from spreading.

After embers were extinguished and the smoke ventilated, residents were allowed to return. A cause and damage estimate were not immediately determined.
