Probation, community service for man in 7-hour Elgin police standoff

A 58-year-old man who sparked a seven-hour standoff with Elgin police last summer after threatening to shoot a woman has been sentenced to a year of probation and 30 hours of community service after pleading guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

Mace D. Davis, of the 200 block of National Street, also must pay a $505 fine and have no abusive contact with the elderly victim in the case, according to Kane County court records.

If Davis violates his probation, he could be resentenced to up to 364 days in jail.

A July 2016 standoff ended with his surrender to Elgin police. A woman told officers she and Davis had argued and he threatened to shoot her with what she believed to be a rifle. The woman had escaped and was not injured, police said.

During the standoff, Davis said he was armed with several knives and threatened to release a "vicious dog" on SWAT officers, authorities said. Eventually, police used nonlethal sponge rounds and flash bangs to incapacitate him and make an arrest. He was taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin before being turned over to police.

Davis was charged with aggravated assault to a person over 60, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct - all misdemeanors, court records show.

Prosecutors dismissed other charges against Mace in exchange for the guilty plea, which was accepted by Judge Charles Petersen in early June, court records show.

Davis' defense attorney, Thurston Kohler, could not be reached for comment.
