Hanover Park may jail Bartlett inmates during police station work

A pending agreement would allow Bartlett police to jail people they've arrested at the Hanover Park police station while their own new headquarters is built in two phases over the next 18 months.

If approved by both village boards, the agreement would begin on Sunday, June 25, and last through Dec. 31, 2018, if needed.

Though construction of the new Bartlett police station next to village hall is expected to be done by then, a provision in the agreement allows for extensions of up to two more months.

"These kinds of agreements are very common," Bartlett Deputy Police Chief Geoffrey Pretkelis said. "It's just them helping us out."

Not only is Hanover Park's police station the closest to Bartlett's, it also shares the Du-Comm dispatch service - unlike the next nearest police department in Streamwood, Pretkelis said.

"If this (agreement) gets approved, it logistically makes the most sense," he added.

Bartlett, Hanover Park and Streamwood have commonly arranged to house each other's prisoners whenever one of their police departments is hosting an open house, Pretkelis said. But a more formal agreement was deemed appropriate in this instance due to the length of time required.

Hanover Park Deputy Village Manager David Webb - who previously served as that village's police chief - said, "We've shared jail space in the past and it hasn't been a problem."

Bartlett is in Cook and DuPage counties and uses both of their court systems. Arrestees in DuPage County go directly to the county jail, so Bartlett's own jail has been mainly for prisoners awaiting their initial bond hearings in Cook County court, Pretkelis said.

While Bartlett will lose most of its jail facility when construction begins in a few weeks, the police department will retain one cell during the first six months.

During that time, that cell would be used first before multiple arrests require use of Hanover Park's jail, Pretkelis said.

While the agreement appeared before the Bartlett village board Tuesday night, the Hanover Park board will likely consider it at its next meeting on June 15.
