Canoeists rescued on Lake Charles in Vernon Hills

Two men were rescued without injury Tuesday morning after their canoe tipped over on Lake Charles in the Gregg's Landing subdivision in Vernon Hills.

Countryside Fire Protection District received a 911 call at 9:36 a.m. and found the men clinging to their upside-down canoe. The men did not have flotation devices. Firefighters used an inflatable rescue boat and rescue hovercraft to rescue them. The pair did not require medical treatment.

Mundelein, Libertyville and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods fire departments assisted with boats, divers and other resources. Lake Charles is 39 acres and includes a canoe launch. It is 10 feet deep at its deepest point, according to the Vernon Hills Park District.
