Naperville plans Washington Street lane closures for signal project

Traffic on Washington Street in Naperville could soon flow more smoothly during special events, but first, drivers must endure lane closures to allow work on a traffic management system.

The city is encouraging drivers to allow extra time and be careful when driving on Washington between Warrenville and Royce roads for the next four months.

During that time, crews will enhance a centralized traffic management system installed last year so it can monitor real-time traffic conditions and adjust signal durations as needed, especially during large special events or other occasions when traffic patterns differ from the norm.

Work is scheduled to take place 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, causing temporary, rolling lane closures. Crews will keep at least one lane open in each direction at all times, and the work will be weather-dependent.

The centralized traffic management system integrates three formerly disconnected systems along Washington Street. It allows more consistent synchronization of signals to keep traffic moving, and it collects traffic data and sends notifications to city staff members when signals malfunction.
