Rolling Meadows honors veterans with Memorial Day parade

Dozens of people lined up along Kirchoff Road in downtown Rolling Meadows Saturday for the annual Memorial Day parade.

Tony Natale, 14, an eighth-grader at Miner School in Arlington Heights, enthusiastically waved a flag, saluted veterans and cheered on parade participants.

"He loves parades so I try to go to all of them," said his mother, Liz Natale of Arlington Heights.

A recognition ceremony for veterans followed at the town's Veterans' Memorial monument and carillon with a reading of the names of 45 Rolling Meadows veterans who died in 2016.

State Sen. Tom Rooney, himself a Marine Corps veteran, was among the speakers at the ceremony, which included local and state officials.

Rooney said too many veterans have given their lives in the global war on terror and recognized their contribution.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi said today "we are not Democrats. We are not Republicans. We are not Cubs fans or Sox fans. We are Americans and we've come to cherish the memory of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice."
