Rolling Meadows opts out of county minimum wage hike

Rolling Meadows has formally opted out of Cook County's ordinances raising the minimum wage and mandating sick leave for workers.

The city council voted 6-0 Tuesday to pre-empt the county rules, which would establish the minimum wage at $10 an hour beginning in July, then rise by a dollar each year through 2020. The sick leave ordinance requires employers to offer up to five such days each year.

Aldermen previously indicated their preference of opting out during an April 18 committee meeting. They voted Tuesday night with no discussion, though two business owners and a chamber of commerce representative spoke in favor of foregoing the county ordinances.

The city joins a growing number of Northwest suburban municipalities that have passed opt-out ordinances, including Arlington Heights, Palatine, Schaumburg and Barrington.
