Man sentenced for Hoffman Estates, Schaumburg gas station robberies

A 52-year-old Chicago parolee pleaded guilty Thursday to robbing four gas stations in Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg last year.

In exchange for his guilty plea to armed robbery, aggravated robbery and theft, Carl Jones, of the 7500 block of S. Carpenter St., was sentenced to 20 years in prison and ordered to pay $404 in fines. Jones' sentences will run concurrently, according to court records, which indicated Jones received credit for 382 days in custody.

At about 8:45 p.m. March 24, 2016, prosecutors said, Jones entered a gas station in the 2500 block of Golf Road in Hoffman Estates, pulled a gun from his waistband and demanded the cash drawer. Within 15 minutes, according to prosecutors, Jones entered a gas station in the 2300 block of W. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg and made the same demands. Each time he left with between $300 and $400 in cash, authorities said.

A similar robbery occurred about 9:30 p.m. March 29, 2016, at another gas station in the 2500 block of W. Golf Road in Hoffman Estates. That time he made off with about $150, authorities said. The final robbery took place about midnight April 18, 2016, at a second gas station in the 2300 block of W. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg. Prosecutors say Jones entered the gas station, threatened the clerk and demanded the cash drawer, which contained about $250, authorities said.

Every robbery but the first was captured by video surveillance.
