Stevenson theater performances to benefit family of Mundelein teen
Upcoming theatrical performances at Stevenson High School will benefit the family of a Mundelein teen who was fatally struck by a car last month.
All profits from concession sales at two performances of one-act plays scheduled for April 28-29 at the Lincolnshire school will go to the family of Adrian Marinez, a 13-year-old who was killed March 31 as he tried to cross Townline Road near Milwaukee Avenue in Vernon Hills.
Adrian was a seventh-grader at Sandburg Middle School in Mundelein. His mother, Ana, is a Sodexo custodial employee who works at Stevenson.
"Ana has been part of the Stevenson family for 10 years, and we want to help her during this difficult time," Stevenson spokesman Jim Conrey said.
Donations for the Marinez family will be accepted at the shows, too.
Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. each day in Stevenson's West Auditorium.
The one-act plays have been written and directed by Stevenson High students. Eight plays will be performed, the same lineup each night.
Stevenson Theater Director Lauren Rawitz and school costume designer Aliceson Hacket-Rubel thought of turning the shows into fundraisers for Adrian's family.
"I was sitting in my car crying when I heard the news (about Adrian's death)," Rawitz said. "As a mother, my heart was breaking for Ana."
The students involved in the productions "were all on board," with making the shows into benefits, Rawitz said.

The performances aren't the only public benefits for the Marinez family. A GoFundMe page created to help cover Adrian's funeral expenses has raised more than $17,000.
