See 'Yellow Submarine' in Downers Grove and help support student films

The After Hours Film Society returns to Downers Grove's Tivoli Theatre, 5021 Highland Ave., with a 50th anniversary restoration of “Yellow Submarine,” the psychedelic, animated tribute to The Beatles. A new 4K remastered print — called “startling” by Variety's Owen Gleiberman in his recent review — will screen at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 23. Tickets are $8 for AFHS members, $12 for nonmembers.

“Yellow Submarine” features the titular song and 15 other Beatles favorites in the colorful tale of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (guess who those characters are modeled after) saving an undersea wonderland from the Blue Meanies, who look like a mashup of Goofy, the Hamburglar and a giant blue wig. Oh, and they wear cowboy boots, too.

It's not intellectual fare, but “Yellow Submarine” is a true relic of its era, a sort of kid-friendly acid trip. It also offers you the opportunity to hear classics such as “Eleanor Rigby” and “With a Little Help From My Friends” booming over the Tivoli's speakers, and gives you a glimpse of the real-life John, Paul, George and Ringo at the end.

As an added bonus, your admission will help fund another great AFHS event.

Student film festival

That would be Anim8, the After Hours Film Society's 16th annual celebration of animated and/or experimental films, all running eight minutes or less. Students can enter films online by Sunday, July 22, at filmfreeway.com (the site also lists a “late deadline” of Aug. 2); entries will be judged by filmmakers and teachers. Judges will award up to $3,000 in prizes at the festival's Oct. 15 screening event at Tivoli. Visit afterhoursfilmsociety.com for more information.
