Memorial Day weekend brings fests, services and patriotic parades

Memorial Day weekend kicks off festival season in the suburbs, and the days ahead offer a mix of festive art fairs, patriotic parades and somber services.

Four-Day Memorial Day Event: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, May 25; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 26; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 27; and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, May 28, at Warren Cemetery, 1475 N. Elgin Memorial Day service: Various times Monday, May 28, including 11 a.m. at Bluff City Cemetery, 945 Bluff City Blvd., Elgin. Starts with a service at Mount Hope Cemetery, 1001 Villa St., at 8:45 a.m., then 9:15 a.m. service at Lakewood Memorial Park, 30W730 Route 20, followed by a ceremony at Elgin Veterans Memorial Park, 270 N. Grove, at 9:45 a.m., paying tribute to veterans interred at sea. This year's program will pay tribute to the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Maple Park Memorial Day services: 9 a.m. to noon Monday, May 28, at various locations in Maple Park. Maple Park American Legion Post 312 members place American flags on the graves of service members and perform honors at six Maple Park cemeteries, starting at 9 a.m., following at 15-minute intervals. The Honor Guard and 21-Gun Salute march into the cemetery as the chaplain recites a prayer and the three volleys are fired over the graves of veterans, followed by “Taps.” The cemeteries are Pierce Cemetery, St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Gardner Cemetery, Van Vlak Cemetery, Saints Peter and Paul's Catholic Cemetery, and South Burlington Cemetery. Arlington Heights Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 9:30 a.m. to noon Monday, May 28, in Arlington Heights. The 99th annual parade steps off at Sigwalt Street and Arlington Heights Road, featuring Grand Marshal Al Mampre, a World War II Army veteran. It concludes at Memorial Park, where a ceremony will be held. The Fallen Heroes — 58 young men who died in service to the nation — will be honored, and a list of names of area veterans who have passed away in the last 12 months will be read. Free. www.vah.com.

Grayslake Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 28, near the Grayslake Central High School parking lot on Lake Street. The parade travels south on Lake to Junior Avenue and east to Memorial Park. The service will be held after the parade. Free.

Itasca Memorial Day Parade: 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 28, from the intersection of Bryn Mawr and Catalpa to Usher Park, 203 S. Walnut, Itasca. A memorial service begins immediately after the parade at Usher Park, courtesy of the VFW Post 5167. Parade awards announced after the service. Mount Prospect Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 28, from downtown to Lions Park, 411 S. Maple St., Mount Prospect. Parade participants line up at Emerson Street and Busse Avenue between 9 and 9:15 a.m. Parade begins about 9:40 a.m. in front of Village Hall, 50 S. Round Lake Area Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 28, for opening ceremony at American Legion Post 1170, 111 E. Main St., Round Lake Park. Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg Memorial Day Ceremony: 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, May 28, at the Hoffman Estates Police Department, 411 W. Higgins Road, Hoffman Estates. Join Mayor McLeod, trustees and the Veterans Memorial Commission for a ceremony. The observance will move to Schaumburg for a 10:45 a.m. outdoor ceremony at the St. Peter Lutheran Church Cemetery, 202 E. Schaumburg Road, culminating with an indoor service beginning at 11:25 a.m. Afterward, weather permitting, hot dogs and other refreshments will be served at the Picnic Grove at St. Peter Lutheran Church, and the one-room schoolhouse museum on the grounds will be open for tours. The ceremony will include the Lindenhurst-Grayslake Police Explorer Post 2008 Color Guard and Lake Villa/Lindenhurst VFW Post 4308. Palatine Memorial Day: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, May 28, in Palatine. Palatine American Legion Post 690 is sponsoring a Memorial Day parade and other related activities beginning at 10 a.m. with a service at Hillside Cemetery on Smith Street, immediately followed by a parade. The parade will start at 10:15 a.m. at Cornell Avenue and Smith Street. Following the parade at 11 a.m., there will be a short program at the Veterans Memorial and another ceremony at the Legion Memorial in Towne Square, 150 W. St. Charles Memorial Day Parade: 10 a.m. Monday, May 28, starting at Sixth and Main streets and continuing to Riverside Avenue, ending at Freedom Shrine (along the Fox River north of the police department), St. Charles. There will be a ceremony behind the police station, 211 N. Riverside Ave. In the case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be inside St. Charles Fire Station 1 at 112 N. Bartlett Memorial Day Walk and ceremony: 10 a.m. Monday, May 28, in Bartlett. For more than three decades, Bartlett has honored its deceased veterans with a Memorial Day Walk and Remembrance. Begins at Bartlett Park, Oak and North avenues, with an American Legion flag retirement ceremony. Lake Villa Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 11 a.m. Monday, May 28, for service in front of VFW Post 4308 Hall, 130 E. Grand Ave., Lake Villa. Parade steps off at noon from Palombi Middle School, 133 McKinley Ave., and marches on Main Street to Lehmann Park, 89 Cedar Ave., for a memorial service with speakers and music from the Lakes High School band. Lisle Memorial Day Parade and Community Picnic: 11 a.m. Monday, May 28, at Lisle Junior High School, 5211 Center Ave., Lisle. Ross Bishop Memorial VFW Post 5696 will host a parade and community picnic. Parade proceeds down Main Street to School Street, ending at the Lisle Veterans Memorial.
