Memorial Day weekend brings fests, services and patriotic parades

Memorial Day weekend kicks off festival season in the suburbs, and the days ahead offer a mix of festive art fairs, patriotic parades and somber services.

Four-Day Memorial Day Event: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, May 25; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 26; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 27; and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, May 28, at Warren Cemetery, 1475 N. Maple Park Memorial Day services: 9 a.m. to noon Monday, May 28, at various locations in Maple Park. Maple Park American Legion Post 312 members place American flags on the graves of service members and perform honors at six Maple Park cemeteries, starting at 9 a.m., following at 15-minute intervals. The Honor Guard and 21-Gun Salute march into the cemetery as the chaplain recites a prayer and the three volleys are fired over the graves of veterans, followed by “Taps.” The cemeteries are Pierce Cemetery, St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Gardner Cemetery, Van Vlak Cemetery, Saints Peter and Paul's Catholic Cemetery, and South Burlington Cemetery. Arlington Heights Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 9:30 a.m. to noon Monday, May 28, in Arlington Heights. The 99th annual parade steps off at Sigwalt Street and Arlington Heights Road, featuring Grand Marshal Al Mampre, a World War II Army veteran. It concludes at Memorial Park, where a ceremony will be held. The Fallen Heroes — 58 young men who died in service to the nation — will be honored, and a list of names of area veterans who have passed away in the last 12 months will be read. Free. www.vah.com.

Grayslake Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 28, near the Grayslake Central High School parking lot on Lake Street. The parade travels south on Lake to Junior Avenue and east to Memorial Park. The service will be held after the parade. Free.

Itasca Memorial Day Parade: 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 28, from the intersection of Bryn Mawr and Catalpa to Usher Park, 203 S. Walnut, Itasca. The observance will move to Schaumburg for a 10:45 a.m. outdoor ceremony at the St. Peter Lutheran Church Cemetery, 202 E. Palatine American Legion Post 690 is sponsoring a Memorial Day parade and other related activities beginning at 10 a.m. with a service at Hillside Cemetery on Smith Street, immediately followed by a parade. The parade will start at 10:15 a.m. at Cornell Avenue and Smith Street. Following the parade at 11 a.m., there will be a short program at the Veterans Memorial and another ceremony at the Legion Memorial in Towne Square, 150 W. Bartlett Memorial Day Walk and ceremony: 10 a.m. Monday, May 28, in Bartlett. For more than three decades, Bartlett has honored its deceased veterans with a Memorial Day Walk and Remembrance.
