7 doggie Easter egg hunts for your four-legged friends

Kids hunting for vibrantly colored Easter eggs is a sure sign of spring. And while there are plenty of them to choose from, there are also hunts designed for furry, four-legged family members as well.

Here are seven Easter egg hunts for dogs in the suburbs - bunny ears optional:

<b>Hoffman Estates:</b> The Doggie Eggstravaganza kicks off at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at 3600 Lexington Drive, but get there early - before 8:45 - if you haven't registered in advance. Proof of vaccinations is required. Dogs must be leashed, and there will be separate events for large and small pooches. heparks.org.

<b>Batavia:</b> Leashed dogs can hunt for treat-filled eggs at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at the Bark Park at West Main Community Park, 40W101 Main St., Batavia. Special prize eggs will be hidden throughout. Registration begins at 11 a.m., and the event includes the chance to browse pet-friendly booths. The cost is $10 per dog and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Anderson Animal Shelter. Don't forget your basket! bataviaparks.org.

<b>Wood Dale:</b> The 10th annual dog hunt runs from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at White Oaks Dog Park, 111 E. Foster Ave., Wood Dale. Pups will search for eggs filled with special treats first, and a costume contest will be held after the hunt. (630) 595-9333 or wdparks.org.

St. Charles:</b> The St. Charles Park District offers a doggone good time from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at James O. Breen Community Park, Campton Hills and Peck roads. Dogs can hunt for eggs filled with treats and prizes. All dogs must be on a nonretractable leash, be current on vaccinations and wear tags. The Easter Bunny will pose for pictures, and pet-friendly vendors will be on site. Advance registration is requested by Friday, March 23. Cost is $4 per dog in advance or $7 at the event. stcparks.org.

<b>Cary:</b> The Cary Park District's annual Dog Egg Hunt starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Hoffmann Park on West Main Street. Dogs must be leashed and may collect up to 10 treat-filled eggs. Small dogs will hunt at 6:30 p.m., followed by larger ones at 7. Don't forget to bring a basket and your camera to take photos with the Easter Bunny. You do not need to have a Dog Park membership to participate, however preregistration is required at the Community Center, 255 Briargate Road, Cary. Cost is $2 per dog. carypark.com.

<b>Palatine:</b> The Hound Egg Hunt includes a souvenir photo with the Easter Bunny, eggs, raffle entry and a goody bag for the first 200 dogs. The event runs from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 31, at Towne Square, 150 W. Palatine Road, Palatine. All dogs must be kept on a leash and wear a current rabies tag. Vendors will be at the event as well. Preregistration deadline is 4 p.m. Friday, March 30, at palatineparks.org.

<b>Elmhurst:</b> The Doggie Eggstravaganza follows the kids' egg hunt at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 31, at Wilder Park, 175 S. Prospect Ave., Elmhurst. The pups will have a hunt of their own followed by a costume contest. epd.org/.
