Smashing Pumpkins reunion tour to play Chicago Aug. 13

Original members of The Smashing Pumpkins, a locally formed alternative rock band that rose to national fame in the 1990s, will tour together this summer for the first time since 2000.

Frontman Billy Corgan of Glendale Heights, guitarist James Iha of Elk Grove Village, and Joliet native and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin will kick off the "Shiny and Oh So Bright" North American tour on July 12 and bring it home to Chicago's United Center on Aug. 13.

Tickets go on sale Feb. 23.

The Smashing Pumpkins formed in Chicago in 1988 and initially broke up in 2000. Other incarnations followed, but this will be the first time Corgan, Iha and Chamberlin have toured together in 18 years. Longtime Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder also is on board.

The Associated Press reported earlier this week that a band spokesperson said The Smashing Pumpkins tried to include original bassist D'arcy Wretzky in the reunion tour, which coincides with the band's 30th anniversary. She has disputed the account.

"This show and staging will be unlike any we've ever done, and will feature a set unlike any we've ever played," Corgan said in a statement introducing the tour. "For if this is a chance at a new beginning, we plan on ushering it in with a real bang."
