Respect key to evaluating village's diversity efforts

Diversity has different definitions with the link being respect. Diversity is more than just a racial issue.

"Diversity is something that doesn't just happen. It's not about meeting quotas - we have to work really hard to make sure that there's an infrastructure in place that's welcoming and attractive to all kinds of people." - Nishu Thukral, CEO at Pangea Money Transfer

I have just finished reading the Daily Herald article "Arlington Heights urged to revamp diversity efforts" and am very disheartened.

Ms. Graham, an Arlington Heights resident herself and president of Arlington Heights League of Women Voters, along with 21 other community leaders signed a petition saying that Arlington Heights needs to be more diversified, requiring more minority voices.

To address the petitioners concerns, a village survey was taken asking residents for their input about how they felt about this. Requests for participation were made to Arlington Heights residents in many ways. Yet, the outcome was little resident participation, which could be interpreted as most people being happy with where they live and the reputation Arlington Heights has. This is not a matter of outreach not being done. Most residents were not interested in engaging.

I am a resident for over 30 years. We hold elections to elect people who are supposed to represent the 74,000 residents. Our town holds many honors, so we must be doing something right.

Individuals and organizations who feel strongly that village efforts need to be revamped should focus on unity. It would be best to connect with others through respect instead of forcing a viewpoint. Communicate without threatening or punishing others. Insults to forward an agenda are not a good starting point. Let's start with what has been accomplished and keep moving forward in good faith.
