Learn the truth about abortions

If the Big Rock letter writer came out of the forest he seems to be taking cover in, he might learn that Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit which offers a wide range of valuable health care services to women, men and young people.

Abortion services comprise about 3 percent of the total services provided by Planned Parenthood and they do not "profit" from performing abortions nor do they use tax dollars for those services. By offering free or affordable exams and contraceptives, Planned Parenthood's mission should be obvious to this uninformed letter writer - to assure every child brought into this world is planned for and cared for.

It is very sad that this fellow thinks someone is "lucky" to not have been born in the United States and that he believes we think of the unborn as "disposable." We Americans value all children, no matter where they were born, and most Americans feel extremely blessed to have been born in our wonderful country. The immigrants and refugees I meet through my volunteer work all declare that they feel lucky to have had the opportunity to make their home in the United States and they believe our country is the greatest country in the world.

Under the Affordable Care Act's contraceptives coverage, a path for planned parenthood has been paved - teen pregnancies and the number of abortions performed have been at historical lows in recent years.

The letter writer should learn about Planned Parenthood, become a foster parent or CASA for neglected and abused children or volunteer with one of the many organizations devoted to helping refugees and immigrants navigate their new community. He might gain insight into the goodness of the American people and realize his great fortune of living in the United States.
