Why pass up chance to hire local firm?

I work for a Schaumburg-based painting company that answered a request for proposal with the village of Schaumburg for painting services, then recently found out the village manager chose another company.

For the record, our company had a higher hourly rate than the one that was awarded and there were companies lower, too. Here is the part that disturbs me: Our company is located in Schaumburg and has been for the past 11 years. The company I work for is owned by two people I know well who have homes in Schaumburg as well as myself.

We all shop in Schaumburg, belong to the Schaumburg Business Association and have volunteered in Schaumburg. The company awarded this work is located in Naperville and by the way is in DuPage County. So, the village manager has chosen to use our tax money to support a non-Schaumburg company and send the money to DuPage County, when there was a company in their back yard very capable of performing this work.

I know this may sound like sour grapes, but let me leave you with this: If an alderman in Chicago had a capable company in his ward to do the work, he would never allow an outside company in.
