'Gotcha' mentality maligns minister

It should come as no surprise that accusations of alleged sexual impropriety have been brought against a high-profile individual. In this case, local pastor Bill Hybels of highly successful Willow Creek Church is the target. He has denied the accusations, stating he respects women and has been faithful during his 44 years of marriage. He along with other faithful Christian men and women have built a ministry serving approximately 7,000 worshippers.

He becomes, like other highly motivated and successful people, a target for disgruntled former members or associates to find ways to discredit him and cast doubt on his achievements. Two women who made allegations have admitted lying and apologized. The two couples who have brought about the allegations evidently are continuing their quest to find other women who will join them in their witch hunt. The Willow Creek Board of Elders provided for an independent investigation and it found no wrongdoing. A subsequent investigation of another charge also cleared pastor Hybels. Not satisfied, these two couples continue to spread rumors and attempt to locate women who support their charges.

I am not a member of Willow Creek Church. I have attended five or six services there, usually holidays. I am a Christian man and attend and support my local church faithfully. Our nation is in a "gotcha mode" and I believe this is a witch hunt to try to discredit a faithful Christian servant.

I am praying for and will continue to pray for Bill Hybels, the Board of Elders and Willow Creek to continue their faithful mission to serve God by serving people locally and around the world.
