Why didn't Durbin speak up at the time?

If, in fact, Dick Durbin heard such vile and racists words from our president in a crowded meeting, as he now infamously claims, why did it take him so long to condemn the president's words?

Why did Dick Durbin, a leader of the state of Illinois, not stand up from his seat and demand an explanation of the president's use of words? Why did Dick Durbin, a leader of this country, not point his crooked finger immediately at the president and demand an apology to all in the room for having to hear the bigoted words? Why did he not generate a united front of other leaders to immediately storm out of the room and relay the instantaneous account of the abhorrent words to the press with other witnesses, so the divisive account could be accurately recorded by all witnesses to the president's transgressions?

Instead, this leader among men, allegedly hears these disgraceful words and says nothing. Does nothing. He presumably remained in his seat and continued business as usual. After having a few minutes, while still in the meeting, he neglected to step up and question what he heard. He failed to be a leader in the room when the opportunity presented itself to create a constructive intervention of the president's alleged words.

Think whatever you want about President Donald Trump, but Dick Durbin's actions (or lack thereof) failed the people of Illinois and this great country.
