Cursive memories

Thanks for your story on cursive writing Dec. 20.

It is amazing how some things stick in our memories. I still remember way back in 1954 being taught to write in cursive. I recall have difficulties making the lowercase "r."

Moving on to about sixth grade, we were now required to write in cursive using ink pens. Ballpoint pens were not allowed. By then (1957) pen manufacturers had developed ink cartridge pens so fountain pens and the ink holders in the desks were outmoded.

However, I was presented with a new problem. I was left-handed and had a tendency to smear the ink. I soon discovered there were certain types on paper that allowed quick drying of the ink. Many left-handers (I wasn't one of them) develop a writing style so the palm of the hand did not smear the ink.
