Tollway fines could settle state debt

The article, "Tollway wants higher speeds on I-90," in the July 28 issue struck a sensitive spot in me.

I was driving this past Sunday from the northwest suburbs to Indiana along I-90, I-294 and I-94 at a very busy time of the day.

Call me old-fashioned, but I always drive the posted speed limits on highways. During the time it took me to drive these roads, I passed only six vehicles, which were going very slowly. However, all the other hundreds of vehicles - trucks, buses and cars - passed me. Many had to be going over 85 miles per hour. This "need for speed" has been going on even on local roads for as long as I can remember.

This brings up two points: first, the state of Illinois could probably pay off all its debts by having the police catch these speeders and send the fines to Springfield, or secondly, why not save the money it costs to produce speed limit signs on roads plus installation costs and remove them since no one follows them anyway!

Time for a change. How about it?
