Bending the facts
A recent letter in the Daily Herald was so anxious to reprimand our schools for not teaching the truth about the Civil War ("Get Educated on 'Civil War'") that the letter-writer decided to use "alternative facts" to prove his point. His statement that Lincoln didn't bring up the Emancipation Proclamation until "months before the War Between the States ended" is simply untrue. The Emancipation was composed in 1862 and became law on January 1, 1863. At that time, much of the Civil War remained to be fought. Lee would surrender in April 1865, over two years later. I learned this in that educational system that the writer castigates in his letter. I guess this is what happens when one tries to support an unsupportable proposition. You need to bend the facts to fit your narrative.
