Forest preserve, preserve forests

While enjoying a beautiful day hiking through the Big Rock forest preserve and camp ground outside Elgin, I was surprised by a Nicor truck driving up the trail.

As I stepped aside to let him pass, I wondered what he was doing driving through a forest preserve. Further into the hike I was shocked to see a mountain of wood chips surrounded by stacks of cut-down ancient oak trees. Nicor has destroyed hundreds of oak trees already; clearing a path 100 feet wide for a gas pipeline. Further clearing is marked with stakes and colored ribbon.

This destruction is an outrage. A forest preserve is supposed to preserve the forest. The Kane County Forest Preserve is not doing its job. People all over the world are being bullied and intimidated by the oil and gas companies.

Keep Nicor out of the forest preserves.
