School finance reform is not Chicago bailout

I am grateful for the views expressed by state Sen. Melinda Bush and Mimi Rodman from Stand For Children on Monday and telling us the truth about this legislation that will be on Gov. Rauner's desk for approval. This is a bipartisan effort to reform school funding that is fair and equitable. As Melinda Bush states, "the legislation is written so that no school district will receive less money that it has received under the current formula." She is a co-sponsor of the bill.

She points to the fact that "the bill is supported by hundreds of superintendents, school districts, community organizations, and churches from all corners of the state of Illinois."

Reading their views, I am confident that this bill will ensure better schools for all the children of Illinois. What concerns me is that your editorial board expressed concerns on a Sunday and called it a "Chicago bailout." The editorial board predicted that the governor will exercise his power to veto this bill. It scares me that finally we have some school reform that may not be passed because many consider it a Chicago bailout.
