Join ranks of climate change 'believers'

I always thought that convincing a climate change denier of the error of his or her ways would be difficult. After all, such people seem rarely to understand science and the scientific method, and indeed often tout their ignorance as a matter of pride.

But a letter from Brand Bobosky (May 8) changed that impression. Mr. Bobosky says he will start being concerned about global warming when scientists can tell him how much of the warming is man-made and how much is due to natural causes. Well, I can help with that.

Mr. Bobosky should go online and access a report titled National Climate Assessment 2014. This is a report issued by the U.S. Global Change Research Program, and it has been reviewed by, among others, the National Academy of Sciences. There he will find a graphical representation showing the contribution to global warming of natural causes only, and natural plus man-made causes. He will see that the contribution to warming from natural causes is negligible. In fact natural causes have actually caused a slight decrease in average global temperature over the last 50 years or so. The report concludes that only man-made factors can explain the observed temperature increase.

That was easy. I am happy to welcome Mr. Bobosky to the ranks of those who consider global warming and associated climate change a major environmental concern.
